Collection: Hidden Folk Christmas Ornaments

Christmas is a time of magic and myth.  It is the time of year that we feel closest to the wonder and awe of our childhoods.  Not so coincidentally, it is also the time of the hidden folk, or huldufólk. There are countless myths concerning these hidden beings, which include elves, little people, fairies and more.  Hidden folk, like nature, can be beautiful, fierce and unpredictable.

They make themselves known to us in the in-between time, the space between seasons, such as winter solstice.  This is certainly the time we talk about elves the most and even invite some into our homes, despite the tricks they play.

I am intrigued by how these beings reoccur in the mythology of various cultures across the world.   Perhaps they are real (their presumed existence has certainly halted road construction in Iceland), or perhaps, as Joseph Campbell states, myths are meant to help us experience our lives with a resonance within of our own inner most being.   Either way, they certainly help us experience our world with a little bit more magic and awe.

These Christmas ornaments were inspired by the hidden folk, in particular the little people.  This is how I envision them. They are wild and very much forces of nature, and like many tales of the huldufólk, they wear brightly colored clothing and are nature’s protectors.

More ornaments will be listed as they are finished.
